"Conversations with the Past: Exploring Mayo Wisdom – An Interactive Journey Through Medical History" In-Person / Online
W. David Freeman, M.D. will highlight the origins and evolution of Mayo Clinic's culture through the lens of the Mayo Wisdom Chatbot. By blending historical narratives with AI technology, attendees will discover how the Clinic's founders continue to guide and inspire modern medical practice - and get a firsthand look at how harnessing these rich historical insights can help shape healthcare's future.
Dr. Freeman is a Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic whose innovative work bridges cutting-edge technology and medical education. He created the Mayo Wisdom Chatbot, an AI-based resource that uses historical quotes from Mayo founders to inspire the next generation of providers. Recognized for his leadership in stroke care and healthcare innovation, Dr. Freeman brings a forwardthinking approach to teaching, research, and improving patient outcomes.
Dr Freeman holds the academic rank of Professor of Neurology and in Neurosurgery at Mayo Clinic. Clinically, Dr. Freeman practices as a neurointensivist and as an enterprise telestroke consultant.
Within fields of AI and Machine Learning, Dr Freeman has certifications from MIT in Artificial Intelligence Machine Learning, and certification from Google Advanced Solutions Laboratory. Dr Freeman has built more than 20 Chatbots (OpenAI, Google, Claude, etc) with specific use cases ranging from “Mayo Wisdom” which is a collection of Mayo Clinic quotes to interact with our Mayo Founders and to align our core Values and culture at Mayo Clinic, and “OWL” a wise educator for residents and fellows on call centered on building psychological safety and fostering high-functioning teams communication.
Dr Freeman is the program director for a new and unique training program called STAR-X (Simulation, Telemedicine, AI, Robotics, and eXperimental education). STAR-X aims to teach the next generation of health care staff using a combination of AI and Machine Learning, AR/VR, Haptics, and Robotics to help serve rural, remote, and underserved populations around the globe and to reduce health care disparities.
